Exploring L2 Motivational Dynamics Among Chinese EAP Learners in an EMI Context From a Socio-cultural Perspective

This paper reports the findings pertinent to motivational dynamics in learning English for Academic Purposes (EAP), which are a part of large-scale mixed-methods study. The study was aimed explore adaptation cohort Chinese tertiary students when transiting an English-as-Medium-of-Instruction (EMI) university from Chinese-medium schools China. Data sources include questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews over 10-month length time. Analysis quantitative data revealed that participants became much more strengthened overall dimensional level motivation after being engaged into EAP at EMI context two semesters. qualitative results indicated consolidation participants’ might result newly mediational roles socio-cultural elements environment pertaining discourses, cultural artifacts, important others content subjects with target language. crystallizes situationally constructed disposition second language (L2) is responsive context. pedagogical implications teaching also discussed.
